Gertrude attended the Cedar School and Church. Gertrude and her sister Geraldine drove school buses and played in Orchestras (Gertrude played the xylophone and Geraldine played the violin).

She graduated from Cedar High School in 1928, and attended one year of nurse's training at Mahaska Hospital. She assisted Dr. Perkins as a midwife. She also worked at Mahaska Manor for a number of years. She was a 50-year member of the O.E.S. in Fremont and Eddyville, a charter member of the I.A.W. Club of Cedar, and served an M.Y. F. sponsor for many years as well as serving as a Sunday school teacher. She was a member of Cedar United Methodist Church.

Gertrude married Orville McBurney (1909-1962), Nov. 5, 1930, and farmed north of Cedar.

They had three children: Keith, Judith, and Jack
