ELLINWOOD — Dewey Leeyon Compton, 87, died July 1 at Great Bend Regional Hospital. Born Jan 12, 1923, in Turon, he was the son of Oscar Leonard and Donnie Katherine Alexander Compton. On July 8, 1972, he married Margaret Watson in Stafford. She died July 31, 2009. A resident of Ellinwood since 1977, formerly of Turon and Great Bend, he had worked as a custodian at the Kansas Department of Transportation(KDOT) Highway Department, and for the Street Department of the City of Great Bend.
Mr. Compton served in the United States Army. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Great Bend.
Survivors include a son, Milton Whitaker of Ellinwood; two daughters, Margo Harris and Maretha Washington, both of Ellinwood; four brothers, Chet Compton of Oklahoma, Bob Compton of Kinsley, Ora Compton of Hutchinson and Compton J. Compton of Arkansas; a sister, Edna Harrison of Burrton; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Leonard, Marvin, James and Ward Compton; and two sisters, Fern Keller and Eva Clough.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday at Kimple Funeral Chapel in Ellinwood with Bishop Greg Perez officiating. Burial will be at the Lakin-Commanche District Cemetery in Ellinwood. Friends may visit from 3 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to service time on Monday, all at the funeral home.
