Oldest Civil War Veteran In Sheboygan County Summoned
Cascade—Silas M. Abers, aged 98, who would have been 99 years next month, the oldest Civil war veteran in Sheboygan County, passed away at 12:30 this morning at his home in the village after an illness.
Silas was born in River Trent, Canada, on September 29, 1836. He came to Sheboygan County in 1848 and settled in the town of Mitchell with his parents, sisters and brothers. One of his brothers served in the 21st Wisconsin Infantry. Silas Abers enlisted February 18, 1864, and fought in the battle of Cold Harbor. After steady skirmishing he arrived at Petersburg and from there went to Ream station. He was captured at Ream station on August 25, 1864. He was taken to Libby prison at Richmond for a few days and then to Belle Isle where he remained six weeks. From Belle Isle he was removed to the Salisbury, NJ prison camp. At one time Mr. Abers was forced to go without food for eight days. He contracted scurvy and became so seriously ill that he was ordered from the camp. He also suffered frost bites and at the Annapolis hospital all of his toes were amputated. His war troubles ended a short time later when he went to Baltimore and obtained his discharge. This happened on June 11, 1865.
After the war, Mr. Abers returned to the town of Mitchell residing on a farm there until 1904 when he moved to Cascade where he spent the remainder of his life.
Survivors are one son, Roy Abers of Cascade, seven grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the home and at the United Brethren church. Rev. E. Ward, pastor of the church, will officiate and burial will be in Mt. Pleasant cemetery. The Legion post of Cascade will have a part in the services.
