He was born in Warwick, Canada, coming to Michigan with his parents at the age of four years, to a farm in Sanilac County, coming to Alger in Arenac County to spend his latter years.
June 6, 1884 he was united in marriage to Alberta Pifer in Lextington. To this union were born six children three of whom survive. He also leaves nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren. They are two sons, James of West Branch, William of Jeddo and a daughter Mrs. Jessie Hunt of Croswell.
Mr. Merrick was one of the pioneer Lumbermen of Michigan,spending most of his life in the woods.
