James was born and raised in South Carolina. In 1883 he and Beatrice were married. By 1900 James, a divorced grocery merchant, lived in Bosque County, Texas, with three of his children. In 1920 he was a farmer in Lubbock County, Texas, with his son Lang. In 1934 he moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and lived with his daughter, Ora. He died in her home at age 83.
