Born in Aldie, Loudoun County, Virginia, died in El Dorado Springs, Missouri. He was the son of William and Mary McNeir Elgin.

Death of Chas. H. Elgin, a native of Loudoun County, Va died in El Dorado Springs, Mo, Feb 9, 1898, in the 68th year. Nov. 20, 1851 the deceased was married to Edmonia Francis Swart, who survives him. They moved from Loudoun Co Va about the beginning of the late war, located in Saline Co, Mo where he was for many years engaged in agricultuaral pursuits. In 1873 he moved to Colorado, where he lived until 1884, then returned to Missouri, and in 1885 established a residence in Eldorado Springs, where he died. His immediate family consists of a widow only, his 3 children having died in childhood. One brother, Jas. H. Elgin of Washington Co Md, and 1 sister, Eliza Elgin, of Montgomery Co, Md, survive him,, who are his seniors 14 and 16 years respectively. He has many nephews and nieces living in Missouri and Md, and one of each in Loudoun Co Va. He was a great sufferer from rheumatism. The funeral was at the M.E. Church, conducted by his pastor, Rev. Neil Pugeley, assisted by Re. G.T. Hendrix, of the First Baptist church. Interment at El Dorado Springs Cemetery.
