Samuel H. Cates, 74, Dies At Home Here From Paralysis

Samuel Harrelson Cates, 74, a retired farmer and a former tobacconist, died Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock at his home on East Main Street from the effects of a stroke of paralysis.
Mr. Cates had been in very poor health for several years and had suffered several light strokes. He became critically ill on Sunday prior to his death on Thursday.
He was a native of Webster county and was born on November 1, 1863. He was a son of Thomas Jefferson and Nancy Cates. He was married to Miss Sarah Elizabeth Childers forty-nine years ago.
After farming for a number of years, Mr. Cates retired from active management and moved his family to Providence. He was associated with the Imperial Tobacco Company for a number of years and was also connected with the late Frank Marlin in the contracting business.
He had been a member of the First Baptist church of this city for approximately thirty-five years.
Survivors are the widow, one daughter, Mrs. Eva Vaughn, this city; one son, Clarence Cates, of El Paso, Texas; three sisters, Mrs. L.F. Oakley, Mrs. R.L. Dickerson, both of Manitou, and Mrs. H.L. Jones of Nebo; five brothers, J.N. Cates, J.W. Cates, and G.N. Cates of Madisonville, T.G. Cates of Manitou, and Robert Cates of Dexter, Mo.; four grandchildren and one great-grandson.
The funeral was conducted Sunday afternoon at 2:30 at the First Baptist church with the pastor, the Rev. Benjamin Connaway, in charge.
Active pallbearers were Jimmie Townsend, Charlie Barnhill, Barrett Niswonger, D.C. Villines, J.R. Powell and J.C. Cannaday.
Honorary pallbearers were S.D. Palmer, T.T. Morris, T.W. Dorris, R.S. Austin, D.L. Barnhill, T.M. Townsend, R.L. Price, the Rev. L.M. Winstead and John Townsend, both of Madisonville.
Burial was in Lake View Cemetery.
