Helen M. Cushman, 82, of Joy, died Monday, March 13, 2000, at Rosewood Care Center, Moline.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Fippinger Funeral Home, Aledo. The Rev. Brent K. Phillips will officiate. Burial will be in the Aledo Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, where a memorial has been established to the Joy Volunteer Fire Department First Responders.
She was born Oct. 27, 1917, in Henry County, the daughter of Fred and Jennie Stewart Newman. She received her education from the Cambridge schools. She married John A. Cushman Feb. 16, 1937, in Rockford, Ill.
She assisted her husband in the operation of their farm north of Alpha until her retirement in 1977.
She enjoyed crocheting, reading and spending time with her grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband; a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Earl Etheridge, Joy; grandchildren and their spouses, Michael and Lorine Etheridge of Aledo, John and Debra Etheridge of Joy, LaVerne Etheridge of Belleville, Victoria and Ray Fledler of Fort Dodge, Iowa, and Daryl Etheridge of Keithsburg; 10 great-grandchildren; sisters, Dorothy Carlson of Orion, Marjorie Wongstrom and Roberta Little, both of Geneseo; and brothers, Howard Newman, Annawan, Eldon Newman, Woodhull, Dwayne Newman of Lynn Center, and Raymond Newman of Osco.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, June Hoffmier.
