OLIVER EMMETT BRILES

Oliver Emmett Briles, son of Louis and Martha Jane Briles, was born in Chariton, Iowa, on April 5, 1883, and departed this life at his home in San Francisco, California, on March 7, 1944, at the age of 60 years, 11 months and 2 days. At the time of his death he was helping to build ships for the defense of his country.

He lived in Chariton when a young child and later moved with his parents to a farm northwest of Chariton, where he grew to young manhood.

On September 24, 1905, he was united in marriage to Katie Davis, who survives him. He is also survived by one adopted daughter, Mrs. Mary Ruth Childress, of San Francisco; one granddaughter, Mary Ann Childress; one brother, Wm. R. Briles, of Chariton; one sister, Mrs. Mary Eastman, of Council Grove, Kansas; and a host of friends.

He was a member of the Chariton Christian church where he was ever faithful and loyal, and a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.

Emmett engaged in the carpenter trade, and with the exception of two years spent in Eldon, Idaho, and four months in San Francisco, Calif., Chariton has always been his home. He was a kind and loving husband, father, and brother, and a loyal citizen and his passing has brought great sadness to his loved ones, his friends and the entire community of which he has so long been a part.

Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Virgil Swanson, were held at 1:30 Monday afternoon at the Beardsley funeral home in Chariton, and burial was in the Chariton cemetery. His wife and daughter accompanied the body from California to Chariton.
