The Mass of the Resurrection for Onesimo Chacon, 72, of Portales will be celebrated at 10:00 AM, Friday, July 9, 2010, at St. Helen Catholic Church with Fr. James McGowan as celebrant. Burial will follow in the Portales Cemetery with Pete Martinez, Joel Martinez, Leonard Martinez, Trevor Chacon, Connor Chacon, and Gary Pierce serving as pallbearers. The Rosary will be recited at 7:00 PM, Thursday, July 8, 2010, at St. Helen Catholic Church.
Onesimo Chacon, known to most people as "Onie", was born March 24, 1938, in Villanueva, NM, to Jacoba Chacon and died July 5, 2010, in Clovis, NM. Mr. Chacon moved to Portales at the age of 15. In 1957, he was married to Dorothy Hardy. The couple had two children before later divorcing. In 1972, he began working for the City of Portales as a heavy equipment operator, and had been retired since 1992. On May 26, 2001, he was married to Juanita Montano. Mr. Chacon enjoyed playing his guitar and singing, playing dominos and watching birds and other wildlife. He was a member of St. Helen Catholic Church.
Mr. Chacon is survived by his wife, Juanita of their home; a son, James Chacon and companion, Martie Watson of Clovis, NM; a daughter and son-in-law, Carla and Bruce Howard of Clovis, NM; five grandchildren, Trevor and Connor Chacon of Portales, NM, Garry and Heather Howard of Clovis, NM, and Phil McDaniel of Long Beach, CA, and a niece, Joan Martinez-Terry and a nephew, Pete Martinez and wife, Sandy all of Portales.
He was preceded in death by his mother; a brother, and a sister that died at birth, as well as a sister and brother-in-law, Rita and Modesto Martinez.
