Norman J. "Andy" Swanson, a lifelong resident of Helena, 933 Cedar, died of Parkinson's disease June 14, 2003. Andy had been living with his daughter and son-in-law, Linda and David Bergman, in Great Falls, 260 16th Ave. S. for the last four and a half years.

Born June 3, 1918, in Helena to Junius and Jeanette (Homeros) Swanson, he had eight brothers and sisters. Andy was a 1939 Helena High School graduate.

Andy met his wife-to-be, Anneliese Hartman, while attending the First Lutheran Church and proposed marriage in a back booth of the local Parrot Confectionery store on Last Chance Gulch. They were married April 21, 1946, and had two daughters, Linda Bergman and Kathy Gessaman. They had been married 45 years when Anneliese passed away Nov. 4, 1992.

Andy faithfully provided dedicated service to his family, church, community and country. He was the steadfast patriarch of the Swanson/Harman family after Anneliese's father passed away, especially to his widowed mother-in-law, Anna Hartman.

From 1939 to 1945, Andy served his country in the Army and the Navy, which included three years aboard the U.S.S. Saratoga. In April 1978, after a 32-year career with the state Department of Labor and Industry Employment Security Division, Andy retired.

He was an active member of Helena's First Lutheran Church and a regular blood donor at the Red Cross. Andy delighted in attending ceramic classes and crafting woodworking pieces for both family and church. He loved to work in his shop and took great pride in his yard. With family, he hiked, hunted, camped, fished and cut firewood in the mountains surrounding Helena. Other hobbies included stamp and coin collection, barbecuing, bowling, feeding and watching the birds, and walking his dog, Mitzi. Andy always honored the memory of loved ones with faithful visits to the gravesites.

He is survived by his sister, Grace Bukovatz, Butte; daughter, Linda Bergman and husband, David, Great Falls; daughter, Kathy Gessaman and husband, Frank, Helena; four grandchildren, Brad Bergman (wife, Billi); Rachel Pahut (husband, Sean); Travis Irish (wife, Raeann); Eric Bergman; and six great-grandchildren.

Andy was preceded in death by his parents, Junius and Jeanette Swanson; his wife Anneliese (Hartman) Swanson; three brothers, Ralph, George "Judd" and Ernest Swanson; and sisters, Marie Underwood, Agnes Crabtree, Esther Clawson and Hazel Lundgren.

Andy was loving, hard-working, and always a gentleman. He will be remembered as a kind and thoughtful man who continually put others before himself. He lives on in our hearts, but his caring presence will be greatly missed.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, June 18, at the First Lutheran Church, 2231 E. Broadway. Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Memorials are suggest to Peace Hospice of Montana, P.O. Box 7008, Great Falls, MT 59406.
