Marilyn was born December 22, 1926 in Galesburg, Illinois the daughter of Ronald and Ruth (Swanson) West. She graduated from the Maquon High School in 1944, and then married Laverne Burkhalter in 1945. He preceded her in death on July 1, 1963. Marilyn later married William "Bill" Bruniga on January 15, 1978. He preceded her in death on August 2, 1987. On May 18, 2002 she married Floyd Downing in Knoxville, Illinois.
She and Bill proudly owned and operated the Knoxville Sale Barn and the "Busy Bee" restaurant. Marilyn gratefully donated quilts to the Knoxville Fire Department auctions. She also volunteered as a superintendent for the Knox County Fair. Marilyn was a member of the First Christian Church in Knoxville, IL. She enjoyed hunting and fishing, and was a member of the National Wild Turkey Federation. Even in her later years she remained busy working on the farm. Marilyn dearly loved her family.
Marilyn was survived by her husband Floyd Downing of Knoxville, IL, 3 children; Judith (and Dan) Doubet of Galesburg, IL, Janet (and Gary) Carstensen of DeWitt, Iowa, Jackie (and Stephen) Stone of Knoxville, IL, 2 step-children; Patsy (and Phil) Hoffman of Texas, Gary (and Jackie) Lofgren of Knoxville, IL, 3 brothers; Ron "Budge" (and Norma) West of Ellisville, IL, John (and Johanna) West of Williamsfield, IL, Joey West of London Mills, IL, 1 sister-in-law, Mary Lou West of Knoxville, IL, 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husbands Laverne Burkhalter and William Bruniga, grandson, Kurtis Doubet, great-grandson, Dakota Zimmerman, 2 sisters; Doris Perry and Lois Mae West, 2 brothers; Teddy West and Oley West.
The visitation will be held on Thursday, August 7, 2014 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Home and Crematory in Knoxville, IL. The funeral service will be on Friday, August 8, 2014 at 10:00 AM at the Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Home and Crematory. Rev. David Shreeves will be officiating the service. Internment will take place at the Knoxville Cemetery.
