The son of John Benjamin & Catherine (Palmer) Wilt, in 1860 he was a miller presumably living in York County, Pennsylvania, although he is not found in that census. He stood 5' 5" tall and had brown hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he first served as a private with Co. B, 47th Pennsylvania Emergency Infantry Militia, July 1 - August 3, 1863, during the Gettysburg crisis. He then enlisted in Goldsboro, York County, August 13, 1864, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 24 as a private with Co. B, 200th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 30, 1865.

After the war, he married Catherine Noss or Nauss and fathered Amanda Elizabeth (b. 03/12/66 - married Augustus L. Benedick), John N. (b. 05/03/67), Susan H. (b. 1870), and George L. (b. 06/06/75). Cause of death is listed as "chronic mitral insufficiency of heart" with "interstitial nephritis" a contributing factor. His death certificate reports October 30 as his birthday.
