PASSING OF A MERCED COUNTY PIONEER

Frank Halstead, for many years a resident of Merced county, but later of Mariposa county, died Tuesday of last week in Merced of heart trouble, and was buried Thursday at Oakdale.

Mr. Halstead was married twice. His first wife was Miss Aggie Snyder of Coulterville, by whom he had one daughter, Mrs. Mollie Stubbing of Oakdale.

The second wife was Miss Frankie Shimer, also of Coulterville, by whom he had six children, the eldest of whom Lloyd Halstead has just returned from Siberia with the American forces.

Mr. Halstead was the second eldest son of G. W. Halstead, Sr., who was Merced county’s first county surveyor. He was the last of the family, his brother, G. W. and Jas. Halstead having died several years ago, and a sister, who was the wife of Robt. Givens, died in the early ‘60's.

Mr. Halstead was a trouper in the Civil war and served under captain Smith in a company organized in Coulterville. The Halsteads were from Michigan.
