Born in Yancey County, he was a son of the late Wilson S. and Kate Higgins Edwards and was a member of Grassy Creek Baptist Church. He was a graduate of Mars Hill College and ASU receiving his Masters degree.
He was past President of the NCAE and past President of the Lions Club; he also was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
He was retired from Mitchell County Schools after 30 years of service and served as Principal for 19 years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Inez Banner, Geraldine Boyce, Cindy Higgins and Jewell Smith.
Survivors include his wife Loretta Howe Edwards of the home, two daughters; Pam Davis and husband David of Misenheimer, N.C. and Laura Hewett and husband Ken of Lexington, Va., and a son; Dr. Barton Edward, Jr. of Pensacola, Fla. He is also survived by three grandsons; Ben Hewett and wife Sarah of Culloden W.Va., Andrew Hewett of Lexington, Va. and Dylan Davis of Misenheimer, N.C., a granddaughter; Jessica Davis of Misenheimer, N.C. and a sister Zenebia Greene of Bostic, N.C.
Funeral services for Mr. Edwards will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, June 21, 2010, in the Grindstaff Memorial Chapel of Webb Funeral Home with Rev. Larry Greene officiating.
Interment will follow in the Spruce Pine Memorial Cemetery.
