"Joseph Bunch, 74, who went unscathed through Apache Raids as a child and risked his life many times in a long career as a peace officer, died Monday in his home at Wittman.
Born in a log cabin on the Tonto Rim between Prescott and Payson, he was the son of Charles William Bunch, pioneer cattle rancher in that country.
As a child, Mr. Bunch's home was attacked repeatedly by marauding Apaches and for a time he and his family were driven out of Arizona and lived at Deming, NM until the raids were stopped. Later as a man he served as an assistant marshal in Tempe under the late Leonce T. (Frenchy) Navarre. With Navarre, and a farmer who lived south of Tempe, Mr. Bunch shot it out with two robbers in a cotton field near the southside community. One of the robbers was killed by the farmer. The gunmen had robbed Baber and Jones Market in Tempe, wounding the late H.C. Baber seriously and killing a 16 year old youth who was in the market. Mr. Bunch also served as a Maricopa County sheriff's deputy under the late Sheriff Lon Jondan and during World War II was a guard at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base near Tucson. He had been living at Whitman for 13 months at the time of his death. Survivors include his wife Nora of Wittman; three sons, Talton J of Riverside, CA; Charles W.,Phoenix; Joseph Bradford of Santa Anita, CA; two daughters, Zona Blackburn, Bellview,NM; Nancy J. Brown,Riverside, CA. Burial will be in Resthaven Park, Glendale,AZ."
