ANACONDA — Celebration of Life service for Harley "Steamboat" Ankeny will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 2, in the Anaconda Chapel of KT Riddle Funeral Homes, with the Rev. Phil Masters officiating.

Interment will follow in Lower Hill Cemetery with military honors presented by the American Legion Color Guard. Steamboat will be laid to rest next to his wife, Shirley. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until service time Thursday at the funeral home.

He died Sunday morning, March 29, 2009, at his Anaconda residence.

Harley Frederick was born Sept. 25, 1924, in Fraser, Colo., to Harley W. and Viva (Gill) Ankeny. Harley was raised in Mount Harris, Colo., and graduated from high school in Steamboat Springs, Colo.

Steamboat enlisted in the Navy at the age of 17 in 1941, and served as a torpedo man on the submarine USS Guardfish for four years during World War II. He re-enlisted in the Navy for another four years and served on a destroyer on the Korean border during the Korean War. While stationed at Newport Beach, Va., he met and marred Helen Shirley in 1953 in Norfolk, Va. Before the marriage ended in a divorce, they were blessed with seven children.

On July 3, 1977, Steamboat married Shirley (Blood) Voorhies. With this marriage they shared their children — Mary Ellen Ankeny of Nevada, Kevin (Willowa) Ankeny of Colstrip, Bruce Ankeny of Butte, Brian Ankeny of Anaconda, Harley T. Ankeny of Butte, Carl Ankeny of Anaconda, Tim (Rozanne) Voorhies of Wisconsin, Shelley (Rolly) Hanks of Wyoming, Terri (Walt) Schafer of Opportunity, and Connie Seymour of Anaconda. Grandchildren include Josh Stocks, Spring Lindeman, Branon Schafer, Connie Jo Taylor, Heather Hintz, Frankie Nyquist, Emily and Courtney Voorhies, Justin, Kevin, and Lance Ankeny, and numerous great-grandchildren. Steamboat is also survived by his sister, Colleen Hinman, and brothers, Claude "Skip" Ankeny, and Melvon Ankeny.

Steamboat worked for the Anaconda Co. as a bricklayer until the smelter closed, he then went to work as an underground coal miner in Craig, Colo., in 1983 and retired in 1985 to Ankeny Acres. Harley was known for his great story telling, always a smile on his face, he had no enemies, as he never met a stranger.

Besides his lifelong partner and wife, Shirley, he was also preceded in death by his parents and a son, Charlie Ankeny.

Memorials: Opportunity Community Club.
