Mae Elaine Raisanen, daughter of Charles and Mary Raisanen, was born on January 2, 1929, in rural Frederick, South Dakota. She graduated from Frederick High School in 1946 and was employed by the First National Bank of Frederick until her marriage. On September 11, 1949, she was united in marriage to William Garth Holmes at Savo Lutheran Church near Frederick, South Dakota. The couple made their home on the family farm near Guelph for 55 years. Garth passed away on October 1, 2004. Mae then moved to Oakes, and in March 2008, she became a resident of the Oakes Good Samaritan Society.

Mae dedicated her life to her family, church, and community. She was Garth's devoted partner on the farm. She was a member of the Guelph PTO and Band Mothers, Guelph Garden Club, Sing-N-Aires, Homemakers Club; past treasurer of St. Mary's Church; faithful worker in the Guelph Community Development Association and Democratic Party.

Mae had many creative hobbies and enjoyed giving keepsakes that she had crocheted, sewed, or embroidered to her family and friends. Mae loved tending her flower and vegetable gardens. She willingly shared her great cooking and baked goods with family and friends, too. She was a fine role model for her daughters in their 4-H projects; she and Garth never missed a performance or concert. A faithful friend, she always remembered others with cards and letters.

After several months of failing health Mae passed away on Wednesday, June 30, 2010, in the Oakes Community Hospital, Oakes, ND, at the age of 81.

Grateful to have shared her life are her three daughters and their spouses: Susan (Charles) German, Ludden ND; Barbara Sherburne, Fargo ND; Elaine (Gerry) Kluck, Hawley, MN; eight grandchildren: Andrew (Kara) Kalbus, Rachel (Joshua) Jordan, Matthew (Anna) Kalbus, all of Fargo, ND; Allison (Jason) Stuart, Breckenridge, MN; Megan (Patrick) Brejcha, Wahpeton, ND; Gretchen Kluck, Fargo, ND; William Sherburne, Ann Arbor, MI; Ashley Sherburne, Chicago, IL; four step-grandchildren: Chris (John) Steiner, Watertown SD; Marie Bopp, Monango, ND; Brenda German, Fort Polk, LA; Matt (Ericca) German, Ludden, ND; seven great-grandchildren, seven step-great-grandchildren; her sister, Marie Aaserude, Richmond, CA; sister-in-law, Vivian Raisanen, Frederick, SD.
