He was born May 18, 1920, in Sterling, Utah, a son of Martin and Hannah Denison Peterson Jr.
He Married Lois Tooth in the Manti LDS Temple, 26 September 1945. They were later divorced. He then married Beth Erskine Carr on 21 September 1968 in Elko,Nevada.
He served in the U.S.Army during WWII as a member of the Manti Utah Guard, 145th Field Artillery Battalion. He participated in Pacific theater battles for Enubuj, Kwajalien, Saipan, Tinian and Okinawa.
After the war Afton attended Weber State College Learning sheet metal mechanic skills. At his retirement in 1975 he was an aircraft inspector at Hill Air Force Base where he had worked as a Sheet Metal worker.
He was a member of the Ogden 17th LDS Ward where he had been active in Boy Scouts, as a home teach and working in the MIA.
He was a member of the Hill Toppers and Ace of Clubs square dancing clubs and had been a member of the Hobby club callers. He was also a member of the National Horse Shoe Pitching Assn.
Surviving are his wodow of Ogden: two sons and one daughter, William Afton Peterson, Salt Lake City; Bruce Peterson Salem, Ore;Ann Peterson, Ephraim;two stepsons and one stepdaughter, Larry L. Carr, Beaverton, Ore.; Gerald M. Carr and Mrs. Jon(Jolene) Neese, both of SLC; four grandchildren; nine step grandchildren; three brothers, three sisters, Lorin M. Peterson and Doyle M.
