Payne, a native of Mobile, was a longtime resident of Dauphin Island.
He was a graduate of Auburn University and received his doctorate from the school's College of Veterinary Medicine. His memberships included the Mobile-Baldwin County Veterinary Association and the Alabama Veterinary Association.
He was a member of St. Francis Episcopal Church on Dauphin Island.
Survivors include his wife, Blanche Payne ; one sister, Doris Hall of Mobile; three stepchildren; and five grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at Radney Funeral Home on Dauphin Street, where the service is scheduled for noon Thursday. Burial will be in Mobile Memorial Gardens.
