He enlisted in the Union army, May, 1861, joining Company D, 25th Illinois Infantry, was mustered into service on June 4, 1861, at Danville, ILL. He was made a sergeant in his company and later in 1861 after a severe wound in the right foot, he was honorably discharged, after which he came home, and devoted his entire attention to his trade.
