Tommy was born February 11, 1930 in Columbus; the only son of Thomas Usher Butts, Jr. and Ada Veasey Butts. He graduated from Columbus High School in 1947 and attended the University of Georgia where he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, serving as a Staff Sergeant during the Korean War and returned to the University of Georgia where he graduated with a BBA degree. He was employed by Butts Lumber Company until the death of his father. Tommy then worked for Sans Sousi Distributors as a sales representative. He was a dedicated runner, participating in the first Atlanta Peachtree Road Race, finishing in the top five. He loved feeding "his" birds, ducks and squirrels, primarily at Lake Bottom Park. Tommy was preceded in death by his parents and by his sisters, Martha Patterson (Patsy) Butts Woolfolk, and Carolyn Bealle Butts Wickham. He is survived by one niece, Carol Woolfolk Johnston; and his nephews, William Carter Woolfolk III and Malon Murray Wickham.
