Dozier was the son of John Shelor and Nancy Howell. He married Elizabeth Southern on September 28, 1849 in Pulaski County, VA, and they bought a farm in Meadows of Dan, Patrick County, VA. Their children were Mary Agnes, William Cladwell, John Floyd and Thomas Lee Shelor.

Dozier was in Company K, 50th Virginia Infantry, CSA. They fought at Kelly's Store, Chancellorsville, and Gettysbnurg. He was wounded on the line of retreat from Gettysburg and was captured in the battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse on 5-12-1864. He was a Prisoner of War at Pt. Lookout, Maryland, from 5-18-1864 to 7-30-1864 and at Elmira, New York from 8-2-1864 until his death on 2-16-1865.

His stone is marked 2181; J. Shelor which is the named used in his military records.
