She is my ancestor. The family came in 1838. They came into New Orleans on the Oglethorpe, although their name is listed Bloched. I assume they couldn't spell the French name. The French records show Bloquin. Her husband filed for citizenship in 1852 as did the two sons. Again, spelling of the name was botched. I often wonder if people heard "Brookey" so they just changed it.

Her husband is Peter but he has the Americanized name on his gave - Brookey. When I finally located her, I found it interesting they buried her with her French name. Maybe she never wanted to be here!

They were from Hennemont, Meuse, France in the Alsace-Lieain region. The French records of births, marriages, and deaths show the family had vineyards. They had one son, Louis, diecat age 4 or 5 before coming to America. The two boys who came with them were George and Francis, or Frank. Interestingly the Oglethorpe records show Francis as a girl which again was probably due to not realizing the name cld be a boy's or maybe he also had long hair, too.

My ancestor is Augustus, who was born in America. At first Peter lived in Pequea then eventually moved to Dayton. Augustus lived in Enon and according to Census, appears his mother lived with him. I have a lot more interesting info about the family! Considering that they all had big families, I tend to think that all Brookey people in Dayton area all come from Peter and Marguerite. It is sad they have these two little metal markers. I have often thought it would be nice to get them better headstones. If it wasn't for their decision to seek a better life here, there are a LOT of people who might not be alive today!
