GROCERY FIRE DAMAGE PUT AT $100,000

Fire investigators still were sifting through the ashes Monday in an effort to determine the cause of a $100,000 blaze at a west side grocery.

Fire Chief Robert Veit said fire at RUDY'S MARKET, 934 Bridge St. NW, broke out shortly after midnight Saturday and raged for more than an hour. The store had been closed for an hour when the fire apparently began in the basement and quickly spread throughout the building by way of wall partitions.

Veit said it appears no one was in the building when the fire began.

"There was no fire showing when the first engines pulled up," Veit said, "but when the men opened the back door they could hear crackling in the walls."

Seven engines and several other pieces of heavy equipment had to be called out to handle the fire, Veit said.

"Everywhere the men hit with their axes, they hit fire," he said.

The fire attracted a large crowd of youths, many of whom had to be warned by police to stop drinking beer in public. At one time, part of the crowd chanted "save the beer," while firemen poured water on flames coming from the roof.

Chief Viet said the city food inspector estimated that all of the food and beverages in the store would have to be destroyed.

RUDY'S MARKET had been in business at the Bridge St. address since 1935, according to owner BERNARD SCHMIDT.

Schmidt, who purchased the store from his father RUDY about 10 years ago, said he is uncertain if he will be able to re-open.

"I have no definite plans," Schmidt said. "We're trying to get together with the insurance people."
