Velma was one of eight children born to James Andrew Smith and Ida Flora Loughridge. She was raised in Tonkawa, Oklahoma and northern Indiana with her sisters Margaret, Alice and Florence LaVera, and brothers Orlin, Emory and William. The eighth sibling died in infancy.

Velma became ill in February of 1925. She was treated for symptoms of septic arthritis, but after just a few months the infection spread from her joints to her heart.
