George Washington Eastman was born in Indiana about 1832 and came to California as a young man.
During the Civil War he enlisted as a sergeant at Weaverville, May 23, 1863, and was mustered into Company C, 1st Battalion, California MOUNTAINEERS, on May 28. Sergeant Eastman was mustered out at Fort Humboldt, Humboldt County, California, May 23, 1865 (Orton, 839).

After the war he settled in San Francisco where he registered to vote September 5, 1868, and where he remained for several years (1868, -78, -80, -86, -88, -90, -96, -98 San Francisco Great Registers).
George filed for a Civil War veteran's pension at San Francisco May 18, 1904, and received application No. 1,316,258 and certificate No. 1,086,310. George re-filed for his veteran's pension March 6, 1907.

He was admitted to the California Veterans' Home at Yountville, Napa County, June 13, 1908. George died at the veterans' home February 24, 1909, and was buried in the home's cemetery.
