Heinrich was born in Ruckersdorf, Saxe-Altenburg, Germany and came to the United States in the early 1850's. The first known record of him is at the baptism of his uncle Johann Gottfried Hemmann's ninth child. At this time he was reported to be single and a wagoner (teamster).

He married Ernestine Koenig on April 6, 1856 in the Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, Paitzdorf (Uniontown), MO. Their home was located overlooking the Omete Creek bottoms. Heinrich purchased a total of 240 acres in this area.
