Winesburg, Ohio was named for Weinsberg, Wuertemberg, Germany. His grandson Rev. Arthur Heinrich Schmidt [changed his name to Arthur Henry Smith about 1910] wrote "An Authenic History of Winesburg Holmes County Ohio" -- he states the town was started by four bachelors who traveled from Philadelphia to create a German Village environment where their countrymen could come and do business in their native language.
