Came to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1820 and learned the baker's trade. He was one of the four "bachelors" who came to Winesburg early in the Spring of 1827. Winesburg, Ohio was named for Weinsberg, Wuertemberg, Germany. His grandson Rev. Arthur Heinrich Schmidt [changed his name to Arthur Henry Smith about 1910] wrote "An Authenic History of Winesburg Holmes County Ohio" -- he states the town was started by four bachelors who traveled from Philadelphia to create a German Village environment where their countrymen could come and do business in their native language.
