Helen Safford Lalley, age 90, a resident of Redding for over 60 years, died unexpectedly on February 19th after being stricken ill at her home. She was the wife of the late Thomas Leo Lalley.

Helen was born September 18, 1913 in Brooklyn, NY, the daughter of the late John H. and Katharine R. (Page) Safford. She spent her childhood in Brooklyn, attending the Flatbush School and spending many summers at Camp Quinibeck on Lake Fairlee, VT.

Her widowed mother moved the family to Wellesley, MA where Helen and her sisters could attend Dana Hall schools. After completing high school, Helen was admitted to Wellesley College, graduating in 1936. After college, Helen returned to the New York area and was first employed by a literary agent, and later in the administrative offices of Columbia University.

It was in New York that she met and married Thomas Leo Lalley, who was working in public relations. In 1941, they moved to Redding. During World War II, Tom served in the U.S. Army 10th Mountain Division and Helen worked as secretary for the sculptress Anna Hyatt Huntington. Subsequently, Helen was employed for many years with Synco Resins of Bethel, later becoming Treasurer of the company.

Helen also worked with her husband Tom in the development and production of his Firehouse Jubilee Cocktail, first introduced at the annual dinner of the West Redding Volunteer Fire Department. The fiftieth anniversary of the dinner was celebrated in 2003, and although the formula for the cocktail had been sold to commercial interests, its use by the fire department was protected and the special beverage is still available at the time of the annual dinner.

The Lalleys enthusiastically joined in many Redding activities. Helen was an early and regular volunteer for the Mark Twain Library, participating in the collection and sale of books for its annual book fair. She was an active member of the Redding Auxiliary of Family and Children's Aid, serving on its board as President.

Helen attended town meetings and was vitally interested in the welfare and happiness of her neighbors and friends. Never idle, in retirement the Lalleys developed neighboring property which had been part of the old Rob Rider farm. On a personal level, Helen brightened many lives by her thoughtful acts and kindly wisdom, unselfishly sharing her time, energy and resources.
