Bernard Willians was brought up in the King Country near Aria, on a farm called Puketapu, and on his father's death worked it with his mother. Later, perhaps with money inherited from family in Cornwall, he bought land about 1938 at Tiheroa between the Turitea and Makaroa rivers, and farmed it until 1962 when he sold and moved into Te Awamutu finding a job at Tokanui as a gardener.

Bernard was a reader of historical books and ones on modern geography and was an active member of the Te Awamutu Museum, but also enjoyed his garden and orchard.
