Carl C. Erks, 83, Pipestone, died Saturday, February 23, 2008 at Ashton Care Center in Pipestone.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 27 at 10:30 a.m. at St. James Lutheran Church, Holland, with Rev. Adam Harvala officiating.

Casket bearers will be Megan Winter, Aaron Erks, Kara Erks, Rebekkah Erks, Jessie Klement, Matthew Winter, Brittney Erks, Melissa Winter, Sarah Erks, and Hunter Hurd.

Interment will be in the Holland Cemetery, Holland.

Carl Clarence Erks was born to John and Elsie (Wussow) Erks on July 11, 1924 in Pipestone. He was baptized at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Pipestone and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Trinity Lutheran Church in Elkton, S.D. He was raised on farms in Pipestone County where he also attended country school. Upon completion of his education, he was employed as a farm laborer for several area farmers. When his father had a stroke, he moved back to the family farm to take care of his dad and the farm.

He married Vera Hinrichs on Nov. 2, 1952 at St. James Lutheran Church in Holland. Following their marriage, they lived on the family farm. Besides farming, Carl also worked for Hyde Oil Company in Pipestone for four years, Marigold Dairy for ten years and M&M for 22 years until his retirement. In 1967, they moved to Pipestone.

In 1999, Carl was diagnosed as having cancer. In 2002 he was also diagnosed with Alzheimer's. He suffered from a stroke on Jan. 13, 2008 and was admitted to the Pipestone County Medical Center. On Feb. 4, 2008 he was transferred to the Ashton Care Center.

While living near Holland, Carl was an active member of St. James Lutheran Church. He was currently a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Pipestone.

He is survived by Vera Erks, Pipestone; four children, Rick (Eleanor) Erks, Pipestone; Deb Winter, Arco; Connie (Jeff) Hurd, Brandon, S.D. and Mark (Leah) Erks, Brandon, S.D.; ten grandchildren; one great-grandson and two sisters, Caroline (Marv) Heidebrink, Holland and Doris Houselog, Tyler.

He was preceded in death by his infant son, Rodney; his sister, Byrdella Thomas and his son-in-law, Ken Winter.
