Carol (Ortmann) Bates was born on October 5, 1950, at Sacred Heart Hospital in Le Mars, IA, the son of Roman and Irene (Plendl) Ortmann.

On June 15, 1973, Carol married Joe Bates at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen, IA. Carol's dad "Stoop" joked that it was the toughest decision of his life: Participate in the wedding of his first-born child or attend the opening of the new Remsen Golf Course that day.

Carol grew up in Remsen and was a May 26, 1968, graduate of Remsen St. Mary's High School. Carol and Joe grew up 9 houses apart.

Following graduation Carol was a teller at Farmers Savings Bank in Remsen until her marriage.

Carol and Joe lived in and operated the Newman Funeral Home in Oskaloosa, IA, for a number of years before buying the building and the business. They renamed it the Bates Funeral Chapel. Carol was the chapel's Director of Family and Community Services and the office manager. She also gave presentations and talks to interested groups, particularly explaining death to children.

Carol was active in the Oskaloosa Chamber of Commerce. In fact, in 1990, she became the first-ever-in-Iowa woman president of a Chamber of Commerce.

She also served on the Boards of Trustees of William Penn University and the United Way, and she was past president of P.E.O. and the Mahaska Hospice Endowment Committee. She also was a regular host of other clubs and organizations in Oskaloosa.

Carol was a member of Oskaloosa St. Mary's Catholic Church, where she was a lay Eucharistic minister.

Carol is buried in the Batesville Section of St. Mary's Cemetery, Oskaloosa, IA.
