HAWARDEN, Iowa -- Vernon Sayles, 89, of Hawarden died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2003, at Hawarden Community Hospital.

Services will be 2:30 p.m. Monday at Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden, with the Rev. Tim Walker of United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Riverside Cemetery, Akron, Iowa. Visitation will be 11 a.m. until service time Monday at the funeral home.

Vernon Sayles was born to Bertha and Sherman Sayles on Oct. 5, 1914, in Union County, S.D. He attended Sayles School and Akron High School.

He married Daisy Bennett on Aug. 29, 1936. Vernon farmed the family farm and especially loved his John Deere machinery. The couple moved to Aberdeen, Wash., in 1956 and to Whittier, Calif., in 1957. He worked as a painter at Norwalk Unified School District until his retirement to Hawarden in 1978.

Vernon enjoyed Sunday drives in the country, music, reading, dinner at Emily's in Beresford and coffee with his buddies at Central Cafe. He loved to laugh and kid people. His infectious smile and laugh will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

Vernon is survived by his wife, Daisy; a brother, Glenn; his children, Dianne Kluver, Cherie Hultgren and Vernon Eugene Sayles; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

The family wishes that memorials be given in Vernon's memory to United Methodist Church.
