Orlin was one of eight children born to James Andrew Smith and Ida Flora Loughridge. He was raised in northern Indiana, and later in Tonkawa, Oklahoma. Orlin was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in World War II. He married Muriel Smith, and they settled in Griffith, Indiana. They raised two sons and two daughters, and later retired to Cherokee Village, Arkansas.

Orlin was an avid gardner, with a huge vegetable garden that he fiercely protected from the local rabbits and squirrels! He was a loving and devoted family man, and an active member of his church. Orlin was survived by his wife and four children, as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
