A farmer from Lone Jack, Missouri. He enlisted as a Private into Co. E. 6th Missouri Infantry on March 17, 1862 at Frog Bayou, Arkansas for 1 year. Promoted to 2nd Cpl. on February 1, 1863 and appointed 4th Sgt. on March 1, 1863. He was captured at Vicksburg, Mississippi in July, 1863, paroled July 7, 1863 and
exchanged back to his regiment in September, 1863. Served with his cousin, Oliver P. Powell who was killed at Corinth, Mississippi on October 3, 1862.
