J. Gordon Middleton, 90, of St. Augustine, died Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, at Flagler Hospital.

A native and lifelong resident of St. Johns County and longtime farmer in Elkton, he was the retired owned of Fairview Farms. In 1941, he invented a potato harvester with his good friend John D. Parrish and opened Middleton and Parrish Harvesters. After Mr. Parrish's death, the company name was changed to Middleton Harvesters, Inc., which is still in operation today. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Hastings Masonic Lodge No. 183, the York Rite Bodies, Morocco Temple Shrine, which honored him in 1976, by naming their ceremonial in St. Augustine for him. He also belonged to the St. Augustine Shrine Club, was active at the St. Augustine Gun Club, was a past director of the Barnett Bank, and past president of the Hastings Potato Growers Association. He enjoyed his family and boating and previously belonged to the Hastings Boating Club.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Helen Gould (Gouldie) Bond.

He is survived by a daughter, Martha Lou (Jim) Daniel of Blythewood, S.C.; a son, J. Leighton (Tedra Ann) Middleton Sr., Elkton; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and his companion Edna Floyd.

Funeral service will be Tuesday at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Douglas Clewis officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery with Graveside Masonic Rites conducted by the Hasting sLodge.
