William was the son of Carlton Holloway Miller and Hazel Bess Rosewarne. He was twin brother to Carlton H. Miller, who died as an infant, and Mary Rosewarne Miller Dunnuck.
As a young man "Bill" attended Mishawaka High School and was the first of his family to attend higher education at Perdue University, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1941. He entered the Marines that year and served as an officer in the South Pacific until 1945.He received a bronze star and the rank of Captain. After the war he continued in the reserves and was promoted to Major.
Bill married Ruth "Louise" Sheibley on 30 November 1944 in Mishawaka,
St. Joseph, Indiana. After the war Bill attended Connecticut University for his Masters in Ornithology. He remained in the east taking a job with the Vermont Fish and Game Service until 1961. Canada brought new job opportunities where he moved his family and remained until his death.
Bill was an avid sportsman, dog breeder and duck decoy collector.
