Lewis D. Ellington did not come to Gilmer Co in 1834 with his parents. He was already married & living in Habersham Co, GA. As the oldest son, he came to Gilmer Co to settle his father's estate and moved his family to Gilmer in early 1836. At the same time, his brother-in-law, Silas Smith & his family, moved from Habersham Co to Gilmer Co. Both families settled in the Cartecay District of Gilmer Co.

In 1844, Lewis D. Ellington granted land adjacent to his home for the building of Cartecay Methodist Church. After that structure was destroyed by fire, the church was rebuilt at a new location about a half-mile away. The old cemetery of the Cartecay United Methodist Church is at the original location of the church.
