Hazel Carter Carver Dies at Age of 86

Hazel Carter Carver, 86, retired Readstown businesswoman, died Monday, Aug. 27, in a Viroqua nursing home after a lengthy illness.

For some 35 years she in turn owned and operated a restaurant and Greyhound bus depot, a Clover Farm Store and most recently a dress and gift shop in the village.

She was an active member of the Readstown Church of Christ for many years and is remembered by many of her Christian friends as their Sunday School teacher, or in their Bible study groups as "Aunt Hazel."

She was born March 9, 1893, in the Town of Marietta, Crawford County, daughter of Jonathan and Melvina (Jones) Ward. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Ardath Cooper of Monona; a son, Robert Carter of Gays Mills; a daughter-in-law, Olga Carter of Monona; a sister, Mrs. Bernard Callaway of Readstown; a brother, Emmett Ward of Madison; nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Her husband, William N. Carter, died in 1941 and a son, Roger Vaughn Carter in 1967. Earl Carver, whom she married in 1955 also preceded her in death as did her sisters, Elsie Miller and Pearl Randall; brothers Glenn and Guy Ward of Madison, Raymond, Robert and Seward Ward.

Funeral services will be held in the Readstown Church of Christ Thursday at 2 p.m. with burial in the Readstown Cemetery. Visitation in the Sime funeral home, Readstown, was to be held Wednesday after 4 p.m. with prayer service at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home
