Monsignor Henry S. Bogdan, Pastor Emeritus of Corpus Christi Church, died peacefully at St. Frances Medical Center with his family at his side Sunday, July 18, 2010. He was 86.
Monsignor Bogdan was born in Trenton on Aug. 24, 1923, the son of Polish and Lithuanian immigrants, Jozef and Wiktoria Laniewska-Bogdan. He grew up on Mulberry Street in East Trenton, attended St. Hedwig's Grammar School and graduated from Trenton Catholic Boys High School in 1941.
His studies continued at St. Cyril and Methodius Seminary in Orchard Lake, Mich., which prepared him to serve in Polish-American parishes. Fluency in Polish and Lithuanian served him well on many of his parish assignments.
Msgr. Bogdan was ordained by Bishop William A. Griffin in St. Mary's of the Assumption Cathedral, Trenton, on March 13, 1948.
He served a total of six parishes, the first four of which had deep Polish and Eastern European ties: St. Mary of South River 1948 to 1955, Holy Cross, Trenton, 1955 to 1961, St. Stephen, Perth Amboy, 1961 to 1966, and Holy Family, Carteret, 1966 to 1968. In October 1968, Bishop George W. Ahr assigned Msgr. Bogdan to Corpus Christi, Willingboro, where he served for 27 years until his retirement in 1994.
After retirement, Msgr. Bogdan resided in Incarnation Parish in Ewing Township, and remained there until 2005. He then moved to Villa Vianney, Lawrenceville, a diocesan retirement community for retired priests.
Msgr. Bogdan continued to assist with Masses at St. George, Titusville, Holy Cross Church, St. Stanislaus, and his native, St. Hedwig Church.
As a priest, Msgr. Bogdan enjoyed music. He was an accomplished accordionist, organist, vocalist and homilist. Prior to becoming ordained, he formed a band called, "The Blue Moon Trio." One notable story about the beginnings of Msgr. Bogdan's trio was that on their first job, hired to play at a Polish wedding, they reminded the father of the bride that they only knew three songs. They were hired anyway and, as they say, the band played on, and on, and on!
One of his favorite songs to sing to his parishioners was, "Why Me Lord." This was written by one of his favorite musical artists, American songwriter, Kris Kristofferson, during the Vietnam War.

The Rite of Reception will be at 2:45 p.m. Thursday in Corpus Christi Church, 63 Sylvan Lane, Willingboro. Calling hours will continue from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the church. The Mass of Jesus Christ, the High Priest, will be concelebrated at 7 p.m. with Rev. Stanley P. Lukaszewski, Pastor of St. Denis Church, Manasquan, presiding. On Friday, July 23, another viewing will be held from 9 to 10:30 a.m. in St. Hedwig's Church, 872 Brunswick Ave., North Trenton, where a funeral Liturgy will be concelebrated at 11 a.m. Friday with Most Rev. John Smith, Bishop of Trenton, presiding. Burial will be in St. Hedwig's Cemetery, Hamilton Township.
