He enlisted in Moriah, New York on December 13, 1863. Two days later, he mustered into the United States Volunteers as a Private of Company F, 118th Regiment New York Infantry - the "Adirondack Regiment"
On May 16, 1864, he was among the number of his regiment to fall during action at Drewry's Bluff, Virginia. The Confederates subsequently captured him and transferred him to Richmond where he died of his wounds on July 1, 1864.
