Recorded as a resident of Houghton County, Michigan, he enlisted on April 30, 1863. He mustered into the newly organized 9th Regiment Michigan Cavalry in Coldwater, Michigan on May 19, 1863 and would serve as a Private of Company L.

He is listed as a prisoner-of-war on November 16, 1863 having been captured at a place called Henderson Station, Tennessee.

He received a discharge on May 26, 1865 while at Tripler Hospital, Columbus, Ohio.

His widow, Sarah J. Morrison applied for his pension - the image shows that he was with the 9th Michigan Cavalry.
