Two killed on motorcycles
A Joliet woman and a Chicago man died Sunday in silver cross hospital following two separate motorcycle accidents within 2 miles of each other Mrs. Sharon A. Reeves, 18, of 1102 North Center St. died at 8:25 PM following surgery for internal injuries. State trooper Douglas Mikus said Mrs. Reeves was a passenger on a motorcycle driven by Ernest L. Potter, 19, of 1300 New Lenox road. Potter today was reported in serious condition in silver cross hospital with his left side paralyzed. The police report said Potter was driving west on Illinois 7 when he apparently lost control and went into a ditch traveling nearly 200 feet and overturning. The motor vehicle landed on top of Potter and Mrs. Reeves. There were no witnesses. Earlier in the day Fred Markunas, 19, of 2352 W. 68th St. in Chicago was dead on arrival at the hospital following in an accident on Illinois 7 one quarter of a mile west of Will Cook Road. State trooper Donald Hoskins said Markunas was traveling west on Illinois 7 when he also apparently lost control of his vehicle. The motorcycle travel 290 feet in a ditch, hit a small tree and came to rest in the ditch. Markunas died of internal injuries according to chief deputy coroner Harry Grant. Police said Markunas was on his way to a meeting near six Sycamore when his accident happened and Potter was returning from the meeting at the time of his accident. Mrs. Reeves was the former Sharon K. Kielbasa, daughter of Charles Kielbasa and Mrs. Spiro (Rita) Kljanich of Joliet. She was born in Joliet. Mrs. Reeves was graduated from the Joliet Township high school with the class of 1963. On October 21, 1962 she married James Reeves, a brother of Hubert Reeves. She was employed at Klines department store. Her husband, who is in the U.S. Navy, was slated for discharge July 14 and has been contacted by the Red Cross and is en route home. Besides her husband and her parents she is survived by a brother, Donald Kielbasa and her grandmother, Mrs. Irene Ebben all of Joliet; several aunts, uncles and numerous nieces. The body is at the Tezak funeral home. Funeral arrangements are incomplete pending the return of the husband. – Joliet Herald News, June 24, 1963.
