Mrs. John Elam died June 12 at the family home east of Strasburg after a long illness. Elder W. E. Dudley of Charleston conducted funeral and burial services Sunday forenoon at Lower Ash Grove Church of Christ. An unusually large concourse of people were in attendance, as Mrs. Elam was well known and highly esteemed. Mrs. Elam's maiden name was Miley Jane Spain and she was born in Big Spring township Feb. 20, 1861, being 53 years, 3 months and 22 days old at the time of her death. On March 11, 1886, she plighted her troth to John M. Bland, who died March 1, 1895. Seven children were born to them, all of whom are living. They are Mrs. Ethel [Arthur] Stretch of Shelbyville, Harry, Mrs. Edna [Frank] Crockett, Edward, Franklin Dow, Mrs. Frances Dow [Edward] Rankin, and Hettie Jane. All were present at the funeral excepting Edna who was ill. On February 16, 1900, the deceased became the wife of John Elam. Two children were born to them, Ruth dying in babyhood. Beulah being left to comfort her father. Besides the husband, eight children, and five grandchildren, she leaves two brothers and one sister, the latter being Mrs. Delbert Storm of Stewardson. In 1908 Mrs. Elam united with the Upper Ash Grove Christian church, but of late years she was a member of Lower Ash Grove church. She took an active interest in the affairs of the church and will be greatly missed, not only by her immediate family but by a large circle of friends. Windsor Gazette - 18 Jun 1914
