His father, Corporal Joseph Beard (1750-1831) turned out at the Lexington Alarm, marched from Westminster, MA April 19, 1775 as a corporal in Capt. Elisha Jackson's Co, Col. Asa Whitcomb's regiment and later fought at Bunker Hill. Cleveland Beard moved with his brothers to Orange ca. 1800 and established farms. Cleveland married Elizabeth Spencer and they had 4 daughters. On his grave stone he is given the rank of lieutenant. He may have had that rank in the local militia. He died at the age of 29.
