James William Bass was born 23 Jul 1830 in Hancock Co., GA. He married Martha Layfield on 20 Jul 1854 in Hancock Co., GA. She died in 1856. He married second Mary Jane Stuckey on 22 Oct 1858 in Conecuh Co., AL. During the Civil War he served with the 2nd AL Cavalry, Co. H, as a private. Service records show that he was also a private in Co. D, 8* AL Cavalry. He appeared on a "Roll of Prisoners of War" paroled by Brevt. Brig. Gen. M.H. Chrysler, commanding US Forces at Talledega, AL. He was paroled on 13 Jun 1865 at Talladega. He and his family came to Van Zandt County before 1880. He purchased land in Van Zandt in 1881, previously renting land from Joe Andrews, according to family members. He died 27 Apr 1894. His wife Mary Jane was born 26 Jul 1840 and died 27 Jan 1895.
