Miriam May Carter was born on 29 June 1904 in Mt. Pleasant, Utah to Annie Groves Carter and John Carter. John had been married to Almeda Jannette McArthur, but she died on 19 December 1900. John had served a mission to England, and sent for Annie Groves to come to marry him and care for his 9 children. They were married in the Manti Temple in 1901, and she gave birth to Miriam May Carter and John Groves Carter.

May’s father died in 1918, when she was 14 years old. May’s mother left Mt. Pleasant and took May and her brother and went to Salt Lake City to live. Her mother had to go to work at the Salt Lake Knitting Factory.

May married Lester Howard Lutes on 25 November 1929 in Los Angeles, California at the age of 21. She gave birth to Richard Howard Lutes in 1931, but he died at birth. Her husband, Ted died on 10 May 1960 in California. After her husband died, May Lutes moved to Bountiful to be near her family.

She was the perpetual optimist. She had many friends, everyone loved her. She died of a stroke on 8 February 1981 in Bountiful, Utah.
