Elizabeth Ann "Annie" Sweatt was the daughter of Captain John Dennis Sweatt and Louisa Maria Simpson. She was born 20 January 1851 after her family had migrated from Wilson County, Tennessee to Missouri, making a stop in the Cape Girardeau area before finally settling in Camden County. Her father, John Dennis Sweatt, Sr. served in the Civil War for Union forces; he was captain of the 4th Regiment of the Missouri Home Guard. Her father-in-law, Lewis Sinclair Brown, and his brother, John Henry Brown, both served under Captain Sweatt.

Annie Sweatt married William Alfred "Alf" Brown, the oldest son of Lewis Sinclair Brown, on 19 June 1870. They had six children -- William A. "Willie" Brown III; Elizabeth "Lizzie", Harriet R., who died at age 12, Hettie Louisa, Malissa Paradine, and David Harrison Brown II (named after his uncle) who died when less than a year old. The two Brown children who died are buried in the Brown Cemetery in Camden County, Missouri.

Annie Brown died August 20, 1924 of vascular disease. Her husband, Alf, died the following year on November 23, 1925 after an extended illness. They are buried in Brown Cemetery. (Bio by Joan Wyatt Bradley)
