Born Aug. 25, 1911, in Cooper, Texas, to James Aden and Pearl Williams Chism, he married Alpha Stephens on Feb. 15, 1936, in Conway, Ark. She survives.
Also surviving are three daughters, Evelyn Spradlin and Mrs. Ed (Margaret) Morrow, both of Creve Coeur, and Mrs. Joseph (Judy) Venegonia of rural Pekin; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
One son, James, and one daughter, Helen Vansaghi, preceded him in death.
He was a World War II Army veteran and served in the Civilian Conservation Corps.
He was a high school machine shop teacher in Little Rock, Ark., and a cotton farmer in Arkansas. He worked at Caterpillar Inc. for 25 years, retiring in 1976. He was a member of United Auto Workers Local 974. He played minor league baseball.
Services will be at noon Tuesday at Remmert Funeral Home. The Rev. Phillip Merritt will officiate. Visitation will be one hour before services at the funeral home. Burial will be in Fondulac Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta.
